CHRISTMAS TO EASTER TO ETERNITY
Introduction to Mission
Christian mission begins with Christmas and Easter: Jesus born as a baby that he might be our saviour and lord; crucified to make forgiveness and eternal life possible for us sinners; rising from the grave to be our lord and king forever. Then he commissioned us to join him in mission: “
All authority on heaven and earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age
” (Matthew 28:18-20).
When we take part in mission, we are following in Jesus’ footsteps. Mission is an integral part of the life of Christ’s Church, along with fellowship, prayer, worship, and communion. It is not an optional extra, it is part of our calling as Christians, part of the lifeblood of the Church. Christian mission is following Christ’s call to share the gospel with those who do not share our faith, through God’s wisdom and strength. And it’s fun too, and exciting: ‘
Sharing Faith through Fun and Friendship
’ is our strapline, and that is how we aim to do mission here.
In our secular society, where so many have so little awareness of God, there are often many steps, over several years, to someone finding faith. Therefore, our Mission Action Plan is many-sided. It contains: ‘Presence’ events where we simply seek to serve our friends and neighbours; ‘Proclamation’ events where there is a gentle Christian message on a topic of interest to the non-churchgoer; and ‘Persuasion’ events and courses, where the full Christian gospel is shared, with a challenge to make a commitment to Christ. All these are undergirded by prayer and supported by all sorts of practical organizational help.
In between prayer, practicalities, presence, proclamation, and persuasion, there is a role for everyone to play in mission at St John the Baptist. We are ‘Christ’s ambassadors’ (2 Corinthians 5:20). There is a place for all of us in this
Mission Action Plan
, as we work together in Christ’s service here.
